There are a number of project management methodologies available. The methodology selected for any given project will depend on the industry, the nature of the project, and the needs of the company.
There are two main types of project management approaches; Waterfall and Agile. Within these approaches there are various methodologies and frameworks.
The following are examples of methodologies and frameworks used for each of the two approaches:
| Waterfall | Agile |
|---|---|
| PRINCE2 | Scrum |
| PMP (PMI) | Kanban |
| Scrumban | |
| Lean | |
| Extreme Programming | |
There are two main Waterfall methodologies used; PRINCE2 and PMP. They are very similar in terms of the framework however PMP, or Project Management Professional, is more heavyweight, with PRINCE2 being a more streamlined approach.
There are various Agile methods and frameworks with Scrum and Kanban being used heavily in the software development industry.
The Project Management Institute (PMI) conducted a survey in 2019 and found that nearly 90% of organizations were implementing a hybrid approach to project management. This means most organizations are using a combination of Waterfall and Agile methodologies.
