Iqaluit, NU – Our latest summer camps brought a ton of new faces into Ampere’s Iqaluit Makerspace and Skills Hub, and introduced fresh activities for our team to offer the community over seven fun-filled weeks.
Each week’s theme was different, which kept participants engaged. Whether it was technology, film, artificial intelligence (AI), art, or even learning about game theory, there was something for everyone to enjoy. At the heart of the experience was the opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends, and discover new ideas that can help shape our participants’ futures.
Having access to so many resources at the Makerspace and Skills Hub gives us the freedom to explore new skills through hands-on learning and discovery, and we were also lucky to have GREAT weather, so we stayed active and spent exciting days out on the land. This included a chance to get out on the water and explore, with Tikipuguut Outfitting! We’re incredibly thankful for their support and efforts to provide our campers with an exceptional outdoor adventure exploring the bay, identifying local landmarks and learning skills for observing wildlife. This kind of land-based learning is a pillar of Ampere’s mission, especially across the Arctic.
Every year, our summer STEAM Camp grows larger and attracts more interest from the community. Seeing that enthusiasm increase each summer motivates us to continue creating new opportunities for participants.
As demand continues to grow, we’re always looking for ways to expand what we offer, with the goal of welcoming even more participants each week next summer. Ultimately, we strive to provide meaningful opportunities for learning, play, and skill-building that never feel like traditional summer school.
Our campers have shown us that through hands-on skill-building and meaningful local collaboration, we can create strong community connections that inspire everyone involved. By welcoming artists and Elders into our space, we create a supportive environment where every participant can discover their potential and help shape a creative future for Nunavut.
About Ampere
For over a decade, Ampere (formerly the Pinnguaq Association) has partnered with rural, remote and Indigenous communities to provide access to science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) education and opportunities. Founded in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, Ampere applies a Lifecycle approach to ensure that its supporting learners at every age, and every stage of life. Ampere offers programming directly through Makerspaces in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Bathurst, New Brunswick, and in the Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, and works directly with community partners, social organizations, governmental funders and educational institutions from coast to coast to coast.
